Moving From Calgary to Vancouver: 7 Best Steps, Made Easy
Moving from Calgary to Vancouver means crossing the Rockies and trading Prairie winters for the milder, wetter Pacific coast, with just under 1,000 kilometres of highway in between. It is one of the most common moves between Alberta and BC, and it goes much more smoothly when you plan around the mountains, the season and your building at the other end. This guide covers what to expect and how to prepare.
Arctic Sunshine Movers is a Langley moving company, so the Vancouver end of the trip is our home territory. If you would like to see how pricing works before you start planning, our guide to the cost of a long-distance move from Vancouver explains what affects the price.

The Route When Moving From Calgary to Vancouver
Most moving trucks follow the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) west out of Calgary, through Banff National Park and over Kicking Horse Pass into British Columbia. From there the road runs through Golden, Rogers Pass, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm and Kamloops. Between Kamloops and the Fraser Valley, a crew will choose either the Coquihalla (Highway 5) or the Fraser Canyon section of Highway 1, depending on weather and road conditions.
That mountain driving is why a professional crew plans around the season and the road, not only the distance. Our look at how geography affects a long-distance move in BC explains the terrain, and you can check live highway conditions on DriveBC while your belongings are on the way.

When to Book Your Move
Book as early as you can when you are moving from Calgary to Vancouver. We recommend contacting a mover six to eight weeks ahead, and earlier if you need a specific date. Summer and the end of each month tend to be the busiest times, because that is when leases end and school years change. If your dates are flexible, a mid-month move in spring or fall is often easier to schedule and can be gentler on your budget.
Our guides to the best time to move cross-country and to peak vs. off-season moving prices show how timing affects both availability and cost. If you are moving in July or August, see our notes on summer moves between Vancouver and Calgary.
Winter Tires and Mountain Pass Timing
Winter conditions are the biggest wildcard on this route. According to the Government of BC, drivers must obey winter tire and chain signs on provincial highways from October 1 to April 30, and the requirement ends on March 31 for some routes outside the mountain passes and high-snowfall areas. You can read the details on the province’s winter driving page.
Mountain passes on Highway 1 can see snow, ice or temporary closures, so a winter move needs some flexibility. Avoid fixed same-day commitments, such as a key handover on the exact day the truck arrives, and keep the things you cannot do without with you. For more, read our tips for moving cross-country in winter and our winter moving tips and strategies.
How Long the Trip Takes
If you are moving from Calgary to Vancouver, the drive on its own is roughly ten to twelve hours without stops in good conditions, but a loaded moving truck follows its own schedule. Delivery is usually planned as a window rather than a fixed hour, because loading time, weather, road conditions and the crew’s required rest all affect the clock.
Ask your mover for a pickup window, an expected delivery window and a number to call along the way. If your delivery could run longer than a single day, our article on multi-day delays on long-distance moves explains what causes them and how to plan around them.
What Affects the Cost of Moving From Calgary to Vancouver
The price depends on how much you are moving, the date, whether you want packing help, and how easy it is to reach your belongings at both ends. Stairs, elevators, long carries from the door to the truck, storage between homes and shipping a vehicle can all change the total.
Always ask for a written estimate and find out exactly what it includes. Our guide to the hidden costs of long-distance moving lists charges people often miss, and our advice on how to negotiate long-distance moving quotes helps you compare offers fairly.
Packing for a Drier-to-Wetter Climate
Moving from Calgary to Vancouver also changes your climate: Calgary is much drier than the Vancouver area, where the rainy season runs from fall through spring. Wrap wood furniture well, use sturdy sealed boxes or plastic bins for textiles and paper, and let solid-wood pieces settle in your new home before heavy use.
Rain on pickup or delivery day is also a reality on the coast. Our guide to rain-ready packing and pickup and our advice on how to prepare furniture for long-distance moving cover the details.
What About Your Car?
If you are moving from Calgary to Vancouver with a vehicle, you can drive it yourself or have it transported. Driving works well in good weather if you have the time. Shipping makes more sense if you are travelling with family, moving in winter or working to a tight schedule. We cover the options in our guides to how to ship your car during a long-distance move and vehicle transport in Canada.
Once you arrive, plan to update your driver’s licence, vehicle registration and insurance for BC. Check ICBC for the current requirements and deadlines.
Arriving in Vancouver: Condos, Elevators and Parking
Much of Metro Vancouver is dense, and many buildings have strict move-in rules. Before delivery day, ask your strata or landlord about elevator booking, move-in hours, loading zones and any damage deposit, and arrange parking for the truck close to the entrance. Our guides to Calgary-to-BC high-rise delivery rules and high-rise long-distance moves in Vancouver walk through what to confirm.
We handle arrivals across the region, including Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, North Vancouver, Surrey and Langley. If you are leaving from the Calgary area, see our pages for Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere. Going the other direction? Read our guide to moving from Surrey to Calgary.
